Hi I’m
Cheryl Lage, author of True Inspiration and web host of
www.twinsites.com. Most importantly I’m a fulltime fully fulfilled mom
to fraternal twins Darryl and Sarah and the happy wife to my partner in
plural parenting to Scott. Let me welcome you to our first twin segment on
Baby Talk Radio. A segment that we are going to call Twinfatuation, which
will give new and expecting twin parents an opportunity to ask whatever they
wish about life with two babies. Let’s get right to it.
Twin
mom Kay writes I’m 20 weeks into my twin pregnancy and have terrible
anxiety. I worry so much about premature labor. My ob checks me regularly
and reassures me that all is well and I still seem to be so upset often. I
just feel like I will never make it to 30 + weeks, it seems so far away.
Please provide some support.
Well
bless your heart Kay, like you, right around 19 or 20 weeks I started
feeling minute to minute apprehension for how many weeks the three of us
were going to make it into the pregnancy. All those phrases like high risk
and likelihood of twin prematurely doesn’t do much to build a pregnant
women’s confidence.
And if
that weren’t enough your intensified hormones those levels really magnify
the emotions and paranoia. You are not alone. I’d be willing to bet that
every mother of twins has experienced the same overwhelming anxiety that you
are experiencing now. As hard as it is to remember, try to focus on the
fact that your doctor’s are not going to take chances with you and your
twins.
If
they are checking you regularly and providing medically based reassurance
please do your best to believe them. The last thing that a medical team
wants is to take any chances putting themselves at risk of a lawsuit.
Medical teams always air on the side of high precaution. Undoubtedly they
want to see you and your twosome through to a healthy and safe delivery.
If
needed they will put you in the hospital or put you on bed rest or put in a
circulage which is that little stitch that could limit or close a
prematurely dilated cervix. They could administer labor stalling or
prohibiting medications, absolutely whatever it takes to ensure that your
twins that are developing inutero stay in there as long as possible.
So
whatever lies ahead medically, however challenging it may be, I know you’ll
handle it with grace in a big picture perspective. Remember that
experiencing those apprehensive feelings is normal. In a biologically
remarkable way your fears really provide the motivation for taking it easier
than you might, for resting, for eating notoriously, all of which help
prolong your pregnancy and keep you healthier as a mother to be.
So as
annoying as those are the anxieties do serve a purpose. If Braxton hick
contractions are a concern, drink lots of water, lay down whenever you can
and by all means stay in close touch with your medical team about the
frequency and intensity. If you are concerned for a minute that you are
experiencing premature labor pick up the phone and call, never hesitate to
call your medical team.
Chances are you’ll be just fine but never think for a minute that you are
inconveniencing them. They do need to know your situation and the very
least provide you with some reassurance to relax. Now I’m not a doctor but
if you need to communicate with someone who remembers very vividly what you
are feeling please feel free to contact me via email anytime.
