Hi its Jan Faull again, remember me? I’m the potty coach and author of the book Mommy, I have to go Potty. I’m also a proud member of pull-ups training pants potty training partners. Last time I talked about what you can do with your 6-12 month old to put him on the path to potty training. This segment I’m going to give you some ideas for what to do with your 12-18 month old.

Now if you recall your child will not likely use the toilet independently until he is between 2 and 3 years old but until then there’s lots you can do so when your child is mentally, physically, and emotionally ready to use the toilet, she’ll be familiar and interested to do so. So again when you use the toilet take your child with you.

At 12 months your child is likely pulling herself up and may even be walking around the bathroom. Since you’ll be occupied on the toilet you’ll need to make sure that the bathroom is child proofed which means that it is a safe place for your little one to explore. With awkward tendencies to explore the bathroom your child becomes familiar with it.

It’s another interesting room just like the kitchen, living room and dining room for your child to get to know. Now at 12-18 months your child will take a much more active role as you use the toilet. He’ll be interested in unrolling the toilet paper and she may want to try to flush the toilet. Your child may want to put his hands in the toilet but of course this you won’t allow. Let your child do as much in the bathroom as she can its all about becoming familiar and confident with the toileting process.

Once you’re done using the toilet, set your child on it. There is no need to take your child’s diaper or clothes off simply hold your child in place on the toilet just for a few moments. Say look at you your sitting on the toilet someday you’ll pee and poop there. Watch your child smile. Afterwards when you wash your hands have your child wash his hands too.

Allow your child to splash a bit at the sink. Children love to play in water and relish the opportunity to do so. By washing your Childs hand you instilled this important habit related to good hygiene. Even if you only take your child once or twice a day into the bathroom with you he’ll be learning a lot. Keep in mind that toddlers are copy cats.

Copying you on the toilet lays the ground work for success that will come later. For now it’s only about practice but practice that will ease your child into toilet training when the time is right. If you have more questions about potty training no matter your child’s age go to http:/www.pullups.com. Next time I’ll focus on the 18-24 month old child. Until then have fun with your toddler. Bye for now from Jan Faull the Potty Coach.
